Ross took a deep breath, glad that he had a little time to gather his thoughts and process what had actually gone on here, before he had to give Evan an explanation of his fabulous taste in men. He cringed inwardly. That was a horrible thing to say—even to himself. Eric was dead. Shouldn't he feel something?

Why should you? He left you for dead on more than one occasion and was almost successful the last time he laid his hands on you. Why should you offer him any sympathy? Where was his when you were lying in a pool of your own blood, your brain swelling so much you were comatose? I don't think anyone would expect you to feel anything.

"I need to get up," he said, reaching out for Jack's hands and letting his friend haul him to his feet. "Thanks, can we just get inside the house? I can't look at him anymore." He turned to Evan and helped the bigger man to his feet and lifted a hand to brush shaggy bangs from his forehead. "Are you okay?"

"Confused," Evan admitted, sliding his arm around Ross's waist and pulling him closer. "But I'm more concerned about you. You scared me."

"I'm sorry. It was a bit of a shock. I guess like Jack said, I kind of checked out for a while."

"You're back now. That's all that matters," Evan replied, dropping a kiss onto Ross's forehead. Ross ignored Jack's choked cough at the intimate display.

The hand Jack rubbed in slow circles on Ross's back was a comfort and Ross gave a wan smile of gratitude as Jack nodded and said, "Evan's right, just don't do it again." Looking up, he watched the approach of two uniformed officers talking to Hal as they made their way across the grass. "You two go inside. Me and Hal will deal with the cops. I'm sure they'll want to talk to you when they're finished out here."
